History
Cybele,
Gods' mother, was adored in Pessinonte, Phrigia. She is
a ground goddess protecting the fields and the agricolture.
During the Second Punic War (205 a.D.), The Sybillian
Books advised the Romans to search in Pessinonte the black
stone rappresenting the mother of the gods. The stone
was maintened in the Temple of Victoria.
The costruction of a Temple of Magna Mater started in
204 a.D. and finished in 191 a.D. The temple in the south-west
area of the Palatinus was consacrated in April.
The builduing fired two times: in 111 a.D. and in 3 p.D.,
after the works of recostruction. It was rebuilded by
Augustus.
The temple by Augustus was created on an high base with
big steps. The front was hexastyle and corinthian; there
weren't colunms on the lates (prostyle).
Augustus shown his close to the religio of Cybele and
his wife Livia was resembled to the goddess. This worship
has a large growing since the end of the Imperial era
(or since the interdiction of the paganeism).
